Like our teas, we’re a company steeped in rich history.
The Boston Tea Company celebrates its heritage in early American history when our forefathers salvaged crates of undamaged tea from Boston Harbor in 1773. From these early acts of rebellion that led to independence and democracy, the Boston Tea Company has grown to become a leader in high quality teas.
At the time of these historic events, the American Colonists were revolting against the high taxes being levied on all imports, including their beloved tea. Meanwhile, the aristocrats in England were drinking the highest quality teas quite inexpensively.
This symbolic uprising sparked two major events in the colonies. The first, of course, was the American Revolution, which led to America’s independence from England. The second, unfortunately, was that Americans, as an act of patriotism, became a nation of coffee drinkers.
Over 230 years later, the Boston Tea Company continues, in the spirit of revolution, to present new products that will lead Americans back to their Colonial tea-drinking roots. While our lineage may be American, our Master Tea Blenders travel the farthest reaches of the globe to help import the finest teas, rarest herbs, and most exotic spices to create our superior line of Boston and Bentley's Finest teas. We aim to offer these teas to please and, at a price that won’t cause a revolution! All Teas Are Not Created Equal
As tea has evolved, we have remained true to the art of crafting it. All of our prized teas still originate in the most prestigious estates and are blended by artisans using traditional Old World techniques. From the thick, lush plantations in Sri Lanka and South Africa to the high mountainous regions of India and China, our teas are cultivated and hand-picked at their peak to produce the most flavorful cup. Depending on the type of tea, the leaves then undergo one of many ancient processes to create black, oolong, green, or white blends. Our herbal infusions come from the best flowers, spices, real fruit and essential fruit oils available, and are skillfully blended into complex and satisfying flavors.
Forming a More Perfect Union
The English have been drinking tea since the early 1600s. Over the centuries, they have perfected the art of crafting tea into a long line of blends designed to complement the diverse palates of a growing world market. We can thank Anna, the duchess of Bedford, for appeasing her hunger pangs with the first ‘afternoon tea.’
We must applaud The Earl of Sandwich, who, in the 1800s, improved upon Duchess Anna’s idea by adding his spreads and fillings onto two slices of bread and combining them, creating what is aptly named the sandwich. When you cut the sandwich into smaller segments, it transforms into delightful little bites called tea sandwiches, which are traditionally served during an afternoon tea.
Today, executives schedule teatimes to set a more relaxing tone for business meetings, enabling them to engage in calmer, less hurried conversation, rather than the usual fast-paced routine.
At the Boston Tea Company, we are inspired by these great English traditions and bring our own customs to the table. In 2000, we married our Old World Boston Teas with our vast line of superb English-inspired Bentley’s Finest Teas, which are grown and harvested in the traditional English manner on prestigious tea estates throughout India, China, and Sri Lanka. With over 40 varieties of black, green, and white teas, as well as tisanes and specialty herbal infusions, we are certain to have a tea to fit even the most discriminating tastes.
